Q

what happens after death process

A
  1. tissues start to break down due to enzymes
  2. autolysis occurs first - enzymes from bodies own digestive tract and from lysosomes break down cell
  3. bacteria from the gut and gas exchange system invade the tissue after death, releasing decomposing enzymes
  4. lack of oxygen in the tissues promotes growth of anaerobic bacteria

Q

what are the signs of decomposition

A
  1. first sign is a greenish discolouration of the skin of lower abdomen
  2. spreads across the whole body
  3. colour then darkens to reddish green then to purple black colour
  4. gas or liquid blister appear on the skin
  5. bloating of the body occurs which smells caused by:
    - action of bacteria
    - gases including hydrogen sulphide, methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia and hydrogen form in the intestines and tissues

Q

what is the further decomposition process

A
  1. when tissue further decomposes the gas is released and the body deflates
  2. when the fluid drains away the decay rate of the dry body is reduced and soft tissue shrinks
  3. discolouration lasts for 36-72 hours, gas formation forms after one week

Q

what speeds up the rate of decomposition

A

warm temperatures - speed up enzyme activity increasing decomposition
cold temperatures - slows down enzyme activity decreasing decomposition
intense heat - denatures enzymes involved in autolysis delaying decay
clothing - maintains body heat/temperature
injuries - allows entry of bacteria helping decomposition
