Jobs or tasks that are “physically, socially, or morally tained
Physical taint
Occupation is associated with garbage, death, or thought to be performed under dangerous conditions
Ex: Extreme Weather, isolation, danger, injuries
Social Taint
Occupation has regular contact with stigmatized others or is associated with a servile relationship
Ex: Working with stigmatized populations and service role (first responder)
Moral Taint
Occupation is coded as “sinful” or people who do it are of “dubious virtue”
Ex: Abuse of power
Identity and Culture in Dirty Jobs
Creates strong occupational identity and a shared culture around the stigma
Organizationally Masculine Emotional Labor
Guides people to show no emotion, be tough, and remain in control of the situation
Organizationally Feminine Emotional Labor
Compassion, emotional support, care, etc…
What happens when you have to the opposite of what the Organization prescribes?
When Care work is frequent in masculine labor it is silenced and hidden and becomes a personal thing

They preform dirty work (all three categories) and get criticized for their masculine labor and feminine labor

Aruges Emotional labor is a taint too (like dirty work taints); How you perform emotion matters; stoicism and compassion can be stigmatized
Objectionable (Emotional Taint)
Emotion is viewed as undersiable
Ex: Stoicism means you are uncaring
Inappropriate (Emotional Taint)
Your emotions do not match the situation
Ex: Being forceful with children
Excessive (Emotional Taint)
Too much or too little emotion
Ex: Too happy or too cold
Vulnerable (Emotional Taint)
Exposes worker to difficult feelings
Ex: Compassion can lead to grief and sadness
