Permits required
Personnel required
Safety concerns
Sim-ops concerns
What is the danger in the drydock taking over firefighting duties in drydock?
There may be a deadzone where the ship and dock think the other is responsible for firefighting
It needs to be clearly decided exactly when the responsibility is handed over.
What do you inspect when you go into the bottom of the dry dock?
The hull plating and all attachements (sensos rudder, prop, anodes etc)
A hole is found in the aft peak tank while shot blasting during drydock, who needs to be informed?
Dockmaster (to add to job scope)
Company
Class/Flag (for certifying repairs)
What are sacrificial anodes?
Little blocks of metal attached to the ship which corrode to protect the steel
How do sacrifical anodes work?
They are ignoble (highly corroding) metals, which corrode faster than the ships’ steel when immersed in salt water
The anode forms a “galvanic cell” with the metals it is protecting and is eaten up by this process
What causes the corrosion that sacrifical anodes protect from?
Electron flow
What do you do with the removed plugs in drydock?
Number them
Keep in a safe place
How are the fire lines pressurised in drydock?
Shore Supply using the International Shore Connection
Describe an International Shore connection?
Shore side - Large Flat plate that takes 4 bolts
Ship side - connection like ships fire hoses
Which side of the international shore connection goes to the shore?
The large flat side / the side that looks the same on every ship
Which inspection do you expect to do first in drydock? Why?
Hull inspection in bottom of dock
Any found damage can be added immediately to the drydock scope / planned and budgeted for
What do you check during a hull inspection in drydock?
Steel condition
Welds condition
Sensor Condition
Paint/antifouling condition
Draft Marks / loadline welds + Paint
Rudder condition
Rudder trunk / seal
Propeller
Shaft stuffing box (leaks)
Sacrificial Anodes
During the hull inspection you see a sensor is under a block, what will you do?
Inform Ship’s master
Inform Dock Master
Make a plan, the block may need to be removed
How can a block be removed in drydock?
Place 2 blocks either side of the block to be removed
Use shims on new blocks to take weight off old block
Remove old block
All done slowly slowly with input from the drydock team
