Q

Different classes of bulkheads and their requirements?

A

Class A:
-must be made of steel or equivalent material
-must prevent passage of smoke or flame for 60 minutes
-must be placed in high risk/high valued areas or areas where passenger will pass through such as stairwells.
-the max temp should not reach over 180°C

(Class A60 - no heat transfer for 60 minutes)

Class B:
-must be made of steel or equivalent material
-must prevent passage of flame for 30 minutes
-placed in medium risk areas
-max temp should be 239°C

Class C:
-made of non combustible material so they do not give off flammable gasses at 750°C

Q

How can a fire occur in the scavenge space.

A

A fire can occur in the scavenge space due to the ignition of carbon deposits in the scavenge air box or due to excess cylinder oil feed rate. (Burning or glowing carbon deposits drop into the oil sludge)

Q

What to do in the event of a scavenge fire

A

-Reduce ME speed and ask bridge to stop
-Stop ME and turn off aux blowers
-Stop fuel oil supply
-Stop Lube oil supply
-Do not open doors until temp drops below 100°C
-Remove any deposits from boxes
-Clean piston rods and liners and check condition of scavenge space
-retighten and overhaul with caution

If the main engine cannot be stopped the stop the fuel and supply more LO for the affected area
