Q

What are the dangers of applying water to a liquid?

A
  1. Turns the water to steam (1:1700)
  2. It will sink to the bottom of the liquid
  3. It will raise the level
  4. The burning liquid can overspill
  5. This will spread the fire

Q

What effects does foam have when applied correctly to a burning liquid?

A
  1. Forms a blanket to exclude oxygen
  2. Prevent more vapour escaping
  3. Insulates the liquid which stops more vapour being generated
  4. Produces some steam which dilutes the oxygen
  5. Has a cooling effect

Q

What is meant by Polymeric layer?

A

The water from the foam is initially drained on contact with the alcohol. This forms the polymeric layer.
This allows you to apply further layers of foam on top as it acts as a barrier between foam layers and alcohol
