  • Travel - Teams/ spectators can travel to compete/ watch sports - e.g. British Lions Tour
  • International fixtures - Europa League, Heineken Cup
  • Media - Worldwide media coverage on multiple platform
  • Freedom of movement - Ability of athletes to train and compete abroad
  • Commercial factors - Sports as a worldwide marketplace/ worldwide business

* Media shows multiple sports on multiple platforms – increased spectators
* More coverage of sport – increased sponsorship
* More entertaining – media friendly – Rugby 7’s
* Changes in rules from NGBs make it more entertaining more spectators/more money
* Minority sports popularised, e.g. American Football on channel 4

-ve
* Too much power - Olympics designed for American audience
* Media pressure - deviance
* Accessibility - Easier and cheaper to watch sport on tv. Decreases number of match day tickets sold – Impact on clubs.
* Highlights sporting inequalities – lack of media attention for female and ethnic minority athletes/clubs.
* Event timings are often controlled by the media

* Successful teams provide a platform for advertising – increased exposure – increased profits
* Provides rewards and incentives

* Brands can become damaged through poor advertising – deviance
* Disproportionate funding – females/disability/minority sports
* Sponsorship can be easily withdrawn – no security for athletes and clubs.
* Some sponsorship gives sport a bad image (Alcohol – Liverpool & Carlsberg)
* High paying sponsorship is only available to the elite
