The 123 rule
When a destination has an IAP, if the weather is equal to or better than:
1 hour before and 1 hour after ETA
2,000 ft ceilings
3sm visibility
An alternate is not required
Alternate weather minimums
Precision: 600ft/2sm
Non precision: 800ft/2sm
Standard departure
-200FPNM
-Cross end of runway at 35 ft
-must be at 400ft before making any turns
Standard departure procedure (SID)
-improves traffic flow and reduces ATC workload
-graphic form
-requires ATC clearance
Obstacle departure procedure (ODP)
-provides obstacle clearance en route
-text or graphical
-does not require ATC clearance
Diverse vector area (DVA)
-ATC will vector around obstacles
-until minimum vectoring altitude or other minimum IFR altitude
Visual climbs over airport (VCOA)
-if the required climb gradient is >200 FPNM and you can’t meet it
-VFR
-published procedure
-pilots must advise ATC
Rate of climb (FPM) equation
Rate of climb (FPM)= (GS/60)*climb gradient (FPNM)
Turning error equation
(Latitude/2)+15=degrees of error in a 90 degree turn
