What is the integumentary system?
Organ system consisting of the skin, hair, nails and exocrine glands.
Roles of the skin:
What is thermoregulation?
Where is the hypothalamus?
What does the hypothalamus do?
How does the hypothalamus monitor blood?
Senses your internal blood temperature becoming too low or high = sends signals to your muscles, organs, glands & nervous system.
Where is the adipose tissue found?
Underneath the skin & between the organs
What is the role of the adipose?
Insulation
What is vasconstriction?
Arteriole’s get smaller to reduce blood going to skin = keeping core warm.
= blood vessels constrict to limit the flow of blood close to the surface of the skin = when the hypothalamus has detected the blood temp too low.
What is vasodilation?
Arteriole’s dialate (enlarge) s0 more blood enters the skin, capillaries & heat is lost.
= dilation of blood vessels, so blood runs closer to the surface of the skin.
Describe the role of sweating:
Response to the temperature of blood rising.
= this a response to reduce it.
Roles of hairs:
Hair erector muscle: contracts = warms you up
Muscles respire = contract & release energy = heat
Process releases energy= respiration
Roles of adipose layer:
Insulation & energy store
Roles of blood supply in maintaining body temp:
Homeostasis support
Sweat gland activation
Vasoconstriction ( heat conservation )
Vasodilation ( heat loss )
