Tell me a little about yourself.

A

Tell me a little about yourself.
“Hello, my name is Olivia. I’m a senior at Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School. I’ve been really involved in sports for most of my life — I played soccer for about 12 years and was even Athlete of the Year last year because of my leadership and commitment. Sports taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to stay calm under pressure. Now that I’ve stepped back from playing at a competitive level, I finally have the time to focus on a job, and I’m excited to bring those same qualities to a workplace like The Keg.”

Q

How would you make a guest feel welcome when they arrive?

A

“I would greet them right away with a smile, make eye contact, and say something like, ‘Hi, welcome to The Keg, how are you doing tonight?’ From there I’d confirm their reservation or ask how many are in their party, and make sure they feel comfortable while they wait. A friendly first impression is key.”

How would you handle a difficult or unhappy customer?

A

How would you handle a difficult or unhappy customer?
“I would stay calm, positive, and polite. First, I’d listen carefully so they feel heard and understood. Then I’d apologize for the situation and try my best to fix it or find a solution. If it was something I couldn’t fix myself, I would get a manager right away. It’s important to never take it personally and keep the guest’s experience in mind.”

Q

If a guest has been waiting too long for a table, what would you do?

A

“I’d apologize for the delay and thank them for their patience. I’d update them honestly on how much longer the wait will be, and check if there’s anything I can do to make them more comfortable while they wait, like offering water. Sometimes just keeping guests informed helps them feel taken care of.”

Q

Give me an example of a time you went above and beyond for someone.

A

Give me an example of a time you went above and beyond for someone.
“In soccer, I had a teammate who was struggling with confidence after making mistakes in a game. I took extra time after practice to work with her, encourage her, and remind her she was valuable to the team. She ended up improving a lot and told me it really made a difference. I think that shows how I naturally like to support and lift up others, which I’d also bring to guests and coworkers.”

Q

Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.

A

“I’ve been on many teams — soccer, flag football, volleyball, slo-pitch, and track. All of those require strong communication, commitment, and supporting one another to succeed. For example, in soccer, everyone has to play their role and trust each other to win. That experience taught me the importance of teamwork, which I know is just as important in the workplace.”

How do you handle conflicts with teammates?

A

“I’ve been lucky not to have many conflicts, but if something came up, I’d deal with it through respectful communication. I’d try to see their perspective, talk it out calmly, and focus on what’s best for the team. Keeping things positive and professional is always my goal.”

Q

What role do you usually take in a group — leader, helper, problem-solver?

A

“I’m usually a mix of a leader and a helper. I like to step up and take initiative when needed, but I also love supporting and encouraging others. I think that’s why I was chosen as Athlete of the Year — I could lead by example but also make sure everyone around me felt included and motivated.”

Q

This job can get really busy — how do you handle stress or pressure?

A

“I’ve always performed well under pressure because of sports. In a game, things can change quickly and you have to stay focused and positive. I remind myself that stress is temporary, and if I stay calm and work through it step by step, I’ll get through it. I think that mindset will help me in a busy shift, too.”

Q

What would you do if you made a mistake on the job?

A

“I would take responsibility, apologize if needed, and fix it as quickly as possible. Then I’d learn from it so I don’t make the same mistake again. I think it’s important to own up to mistakes rather than hide them, because it shows professionalism and honesty.”

How do you stay organized during a fast-paced shift?

A

“I’d stay focused on prioritizing tasks and communicating clearly with my team. I know that being organized also means keeping calm, paying attention to details, and asking for help if I need it. That way, things don’t get overwhelming and I can make sure guests are always being taken care of.”

Q

Are you comfortable being on your feet for long periods of time?

A

“Yes, definitely. I played soccer for years, and we’d run for 90 minutes straight. Being active and on my feet has always been normal for me, so I know I’ll have no problem with that part of the job.”

Why should we choose you over other candidates?

“I think you should choose me because I’m not only hardworking and dependable, but I also genuinely enjoy connecting with people.
