Kohlberg conducted a longitudinal study. He measure thinking behaviour and moral development over 12 years. He gave the boys hypothetical dilemas every 3 years (e.g. the Heinz dilemma). The boys were asked to solve these dilemas and give their reasoning. From the results, Kohlberg developed his stages of moral development which have 3 levels and 6 stages.
