Q

EBP - historical development and role in modern nursing

A

Florence Nightingale – founder of modern nursing practice. Identified the role of a nurse on a healthcare team. She recognized the importance of sanitation and nutrition, fresh air – these are helpful in the healing process. She measured client outcomes/data and compared before and after of nursing interventions

Q

QI who conducts and association with clinical practice

A

those in the setting (nurses, supervisors, nurse scientists working within a facility)
within the setting, making/changing policies, and reevaluating those changes

Q

4 key components of EBP

A
  1. Best available evidence
  2. Clinical expertise
  3. Patient values/preferences
  4. Value of research in comparison to info found by other sources: more applicable, reliable, based upon real practices in the nursing setting, research is more rigorous and has actual data - increasing validity

Q

7 steps of EBP

A
  1. Encourage/Supporting the spirit of inquiry
  2. Asking questions
  3. Searching for evidence
  4. Appraising the evidence (assessing research quality and relevance)
  5. Integrating research evidence into clinical decision making
  6. Evaluating outcomes
  7. sharing the results - dissemination

Q

how does EBP improve patient outcomes and nursing performance

A

EBP is based on evidence so it would enhance patient outcomes, decrease mortality, increase care practices. Examples include hand washing, pain management, and fall prevention
