Q

What are advantages for the LTM

A

Clive wearing support (hippocampus). Evidence from patients with brain damage shows that long-term memory is not a single system. HM lost the ability to form new episodic memories but could still learn new skills showing his hippocampus is linked to episodic memory. These cases strongly support the idea that LTM is divided into different types.

Brain scan studies (fMRI) showed that there are different stores for the LTM. there is strong emperical evidence to show that there are different parts of the brain are active when people are using different types of memory
Real world applications e.g. can improve someones life

Q

What are disadvantages for the LTM

A

Tulving suggested that there may be only 2 types of LTM
Lack of clinical evidence

Case study limitations
Much of the evidence for LTM divisions comes from unusual patients like HM or Clive Wearing. These are unique cases, so findings may not generalize to everyone. Relying too heavily on case studies risks drawing conclusions from atypical situation
