Lifeboat launch procedure (Davit type)

A

• Do a head count at muster station
• Ensure harbour pins are out & disconnect battery
• Someone goes in & puts drain plug in & rigs painter line to a strong point forward on the
lifeboat.
• Check area below is clear
• Manually crank up the boat to take the weight off the gripes and onto the fall wires while balancing the load on the fall wires
• FWD & AFT gripes can be removed at the same time
• Ensure bowsing in tackle is tight and in position
• Use centrifugal brake to lower from stowage deck to embarkation deck
• Open embarkation gate & insert locking pins to keep them in place
• Board lifeboat & secure everyone, do headcount
• Driver gives order to fwd & aft hookmen to bowse out by releasing the bowsing tackles
• Once bowsing blocks are clear, the lifeboat can be lowered using the Deadman’s brake
• When 1m above the water, start the engine
• Lower into water & use the off-load release

What is a SART

A

• Search & Rescue Transponder
• All passenger vessels and also cargo vessels of >500GRT must have 2
• Helps ships and aircraft to find you
• 96 hours standby & 8 hours while interrogated by X-band radar
• Shows 12 dots on the radar which expand into an arc as they hone in and then creates a circle of dots around the lifeboat/liferaft when they within 0.2Nm
• Tested monthly and logged in GMDSS book

What is an EPIRB?

A

• Emergency position indicating radio beacon
• Transmits signal to nearest rescue coordination centre
• 1 on bridge & 1 in a HRU on external of deck 16 (opens 1.5-4m underwater)
• Bridge one to be carried by captain when they abandon
• 48+ hours
