Q

What are the common s&s between Wind-cold fettering the lung and wind-heat invading lung?

A
  • Fever, aversion to cold (exterior wind is fighting Wei Qi in the defensive layer of the lung) -> Cardinal symptoms of wind
  • cough, stuffy/blocked nose (the lung’s descending of lung-qi is impaired)
  • sneezing (the dispersing of Lung-qi is blocked)
    floating pulse

Q

Differentiating signs and symptoms of Wind-cold fettering the lungs?

A
  • no sweating (because cold obstructs the pores)
  • aversion to wind
  • cough with thin white phlegm
  • clear nasal discharge
  • itchy throat
  • occipital headache & body aches - as the wind obstructs the circulation of Wei Qi (so not able to fill the spaces b/w skin & muscles)
  • oppression in chest
    Tongue: thin white coat
    Pulse: floating-tight pulse

Q

What is the aetiology of Wind-cold invasion of lungs?

Q

Differentiating signs and symptoms of Lung Qi Xu?

A
  • pale complexion (reflects Yang Xu - which in the case of the lungs is synonymous with Qi Xu)
  • SOBOE (b/c Qi is deficient, only slight & only on exertion)
  • feeble/weak voice (Zong Qi depends on lung Qi)
  • spontaneous sweating (space b/w skin & muscles’ too open due to weak Wei Qi)
  • Prone to catching colds (Wei Qi isn’t strong enough nor diffused properly by lungs, so can’t protect the body properly)

Tongue: pale
Pulse: empty pulse esp. right cun position

  • Empty pulse and slight SOB - enough to diagnose Lung-qi Xu

Differentiating signs and symptoms of cold-phlegm obstructing lungs?

A
  • profuse phlegm that’s easy to expectorate
  • phlegmatic wheeze

Signs and symptoms of lung heat?
- cough & dyspnea (impairment of descending of Lung-qi) - feeling of heat, thirst, red face (signs of heat) - chest ache (obstruction of chest by heat) - flaring of nostrils (only seen in acute cases. occurs because lungs open into the nose) - fever (in acute conditions) - constipation - dark urine Tongue: red with yellow coat Pulse: rapid and overflowing pulse - Cough with feeling of heat & red tongue is enough to diagnose lung-heat
27
Aetiology of Lung-heat? acute vs chronic
acute - usually invasion of external wind which turns internal and turns into heat chronic - either residual heat or rich diet together with smoking
28
6 acupuncture points to clear lung-heat, restore the descending of lung-qi?
LU5 & LU10 - clear lung-heat LU7 - restore the descending of Lung-qi LI11 - clears heat LU1 & BL13 - clear lung-heat & restore the descending of lung qi
29
Signs and symptoms of dryness invading lung note lung dryness preceds lung yin Xu
- dry lips/mouth/throat/nose/skin/cough - hoarse voice - thirst Tongue: dry yellow coat Pulse: floating pulse, empty - dry cough, dry throat and hoarse voice is enough to diagnose
30
What is the aetiology of lung dryness?
