6
Q

what happens in the intermembrane space

A

high h+ concentration builds up here during oxidative phosphorylation
creating electrochemical gradient required for photosynthesis

15
Q

what are some adaptions of mitochondria

A

double membrane - compartmentalises respiration stages
cristae - max ATP production
matrix enzymes - ensures efficient krebs cycle
own DNA + ribosomes, mitochondria can synthesise own respiratory proteins quickly

16
Q

6 steps of chemiosmosis

A

1 - inner membrane contains elctron carriers arranged in a chain
2 - NADH+FADH donate electrons and pass down ETC complexes
3 - energy released pumps H from matrix to intermmebrane space
4- creates proton gradient (high H+ outside, low inside)
5 - protons flow back into matrix via ATP synthetase
6 - drives oxidative phosphorylation - ADP+Pi=ATP

17
Q

what donates electrons in chemiosmosis

18
Q

how is proton gradient made in chemiosmosis

A

NADH + FADH donates electrons when passing down ETC
H pumped from matrix to intermembrane space

19
Q

where is high where is low in chemiosmosis proton gradient

A

high H+ outside
low inside
