Anticoagulant
Indications: DVT prevention, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary embolism. Desired effect: Prevent new clots from forming. Side effects: Bruising, bleeding gums, nosebleeds. Adverse reactions: Severe bleeding, hemorrhage.
Cardiac Glycoside
Indications: Heart failure, atrial fibrillation. Desired effect: Increase cardiac contractility and slow heart rate. Side effects: Nausea, fatigue, visual disturbances. Adverse reactions: Digoxin toxicity, severe arrhythmias.
Diuretic
Indications: Edema, hypertension, heart failure. Desired effect: Increase urine output and reduce fluid volume. Side effects: Frequent urination, dizziness, electrolyte imbalance. Adverse reactions: Severe dehydration, arrhythmias.
Vasopressor
Indications: Hypotension, shock. Desired effect: Raise blood pressure by constricting blood vessels. Side effects: Headache, palpitations, anxiety. Adverse reactions: Hypertensive crisis, arrhythmias, tissue necrosis.
Hematinic (Antianemic)
Indications: Iron deficiency, folate deficiency, B12 deficiency. Desired effect: Increase hemoglobin and red blood cell production. Side effects: GI upset, constipation, dark stools. Adverse reactions: Iron toxicity, anaphylaxis with IV iron.
Vasodilator
Indications: Hypertension, angina, heart failure. Desired effect: Relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Side effects: Headache, flushing, dizziness. Adverse reactions: Severe hypotension, reflex tachycardia.
Thrombolytic
Indications: Acute MI, stroke, pulmonary embolism. Desired effect: Dissolve existing blood clots. Side effects: Bleeding, fever, hypotension. Adverse reactions: Severe internal bleeding, intracranial hemorrhage.
Antihypertensive
Indications: High blood pressure, heart failure. Desired effect: Lower blood pressure and reduce cardiac workload. Side effects: Dizziness, fatigue, headache. Adverse reactions: Severe hypotension, bradycardia, angioedema
Antilipemic
Indications: High cholesterol, hyperlipidemia. Desired effect: Lower LDL and triglycerides, raise HDL. Side effects: GI upset, headache, muscle aches. Adverse reactions: Rhabdomyolysis, liver toxicity.
Hemostatic
Indications: Bleeding control, hemorrhage, surgical bleeding. Desired effect: Promote clot formation and stop bleeding. Side effects: Nausea, headache, mild hypotension. Adverse reactions: Thrombosis, allergic reactions.
