Q

Heart Sounds and Valve Function

A
  • Heart sounds are a non-invasive way to assess heart function using a stethoscope
  • Occur due to vibrations created when valves close, producing turbulent flow
  • When valves open, blood moves smoothly in laminar flow, making little to no sound

Q

Heart sound 1

A
  • Occurs when the AV valves close
  • Sound is described as “lub”
  • Signals beginning of ventricular systole

Q

Heart sound 2

A
  • Occurs when the semilunar valve closes
  • Makes a “dub” sound
  • Signals the onset of ventricular diastole

Q

Valve defect 1

A
  • Valve does not fully open
  • Called a stenotic valve
  • The opening through the blood must flow is restricted, which increases velocity and amount of turbulent blood flow
  • Causes a whistle-like sound

Q

Valve defect 2

A
  • Valve does not fully close
  • Called an insufficient or leaky valve
  • It allows the back flow of blood (regurgitation), which is turbulent
  • Creates a swishing or gurgling sound
