Participants are assigned to, or come from, two or more different groups

e.g. treatment/control groups; male/female

Research question: Is there a difference between the groups?

Example research question:

Does a treatment make a difference?

Each participant comes from one and only one group

How do we know to reject the null hypothesis?

Answer 2

Is the p value less that .05?
If it is, we have evidence that it works
therefore we reject the null hypothesis
Cohen’s d is high for this, means effect size is large
