MUMPS Incubation period
18 days; avg. of 12-26 days
MUMPS Period of communicability
before the glands are swollen and lasts as long as swelling remains. (Highly communicable)
MUMPS S/sx
PAROTITIS: Painful swelling in front of ear, angle of jaws and down the neck (pathognomonic sign)
F- fever too high
M- malaise
L/A- loss of appetite/anorexia
MUMPS Complications
O- orchitis (inflammation of testis that can cause permanent sterility, DOC: cortisone which is anti inflammatory)
E- encephalitis (it could invade the meninges of the brain)

Adults: 300 to 400 mg CORTISONE then 100 mg every 6 hours
