MUMPS Incubation period
18 days; avg. of 12-26 days
MUMPS Period of communicability
before the glands are swollen and lasts as long as swelling remains. (Highly communicable)
MUMPS S/sx
PAROTITIS: Painful swelling in front of ear, angle of jaws and down the neck (pathognomonic sign)
F- fever too high
M- malaise
L/A- loss of appetite/anorexia
MUMPS Complications
O- orchitis (inflammation of testis that can cause permanent sterility, DOC: cortisone which is anti inflammatory)
E- encephalitis (it could invade the meninges of the brain)
MUMPS Management
- Care of contaminated articles (boil first, especially the clothes for 30 mins. Before washing and dispose properly)
- Cleaning and airing of room for 5 to 7 hours (keep a well ventilated room)
- Bed rest (due to malaise)
- TSB or alcohol rub for fever (fever up to 38-40 degree Celsius, to promote heat loss)
- Hot and cold application on swollen jaws
- Frequent antiseptic mouth washes and regular oral hygiene (for comfort and soothe throat)
- Scrotum may be supported with a properly fitted suspensory pillow or a sling between thighs (orchitis)
MUMPS Diet
- could not tolerate acidic, sweet, and very hot and cold beverages
- increased protein and vit. C (immune system)
MUMPS DOC
Adults: 300 to 400 mg CORTISONE then 100 mg every 6 hours
MUMPS IMMUNIZATION/PREVENTION
MMR @ 12-15 mos.
MUMPS PATHOGENESIS
- Virus enters the body thru nasopharynx
- Virus replicates (make copies of itself) in the
nasopharynx - Virus will multiply
- Invade regional lymph nodes and tissues
- Invades blood
stream - Viremia
- Spreads in the tissues of the testes
- Virus infiltrates the lymphocytes
- Could readily cross the blood testes barrier
- Edema; increased intratesticular pressure; pancreas; meninges; salivary glands
- Orchitis (inflammation of the testes); parotitis; encephalitis
- Fever, malaise, loss of appetite, anorexia
