Rabies PATHOGENESIS

1. Bite of an infective rabid animal
2. Virus introduced in an open wound (inoculation)
3. Virus will bind with cell receptors
4. Virus replicates particularly in striated muscles
5. Spread and infect the nerve cells and travel directly and attack the CNS
6. Migrate to peripheral nerves directly and migrates to the brain or may replicate in muscle tissue
7. Rapid virus replication
8. Affect adjacent non nervous tissues
9. Hydrophobia, sense of apprehension, fever, headache, muscle spasms, paralysis, delirium, convulsions.
