Nucleic Acids
Bases & Nucleosides:
Nitrogen-containing bases with a double-ring structure (one six-membered and one five-membered ring). Found in nucleic acids are adenine (A) and guanine (G).
Purines
Bases & Nucleosides:
Nitrogen-containing bases with a single-ring structure (one six-membered ring). Found in nucleic acids are cytosine (C), thymine (T), and uracil (U).
Pyrimidines
*Made up of two parts: purine base and pyrimidine base to form a sugar molecule
*does not have a phosphate group
Nucleosides
*five-carbon (pentose) sugar found in RNA (ribonucleic acid)
*has a hydroxyl group (-OH) on the 2’ carbon atom
Ribose
a five-carbon sugar, but it’s found in DNA.
only a hydrogen atom (-H) at 2’ carbon atom
Deoxyribose
•A five-carbon sugar found in RNA
•a pentose sugar with a hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to the 2′ carbon atom.
Ribose
•A nucleoside found in DNA composed of deoxyribose and adenine.
• formed when adenine attaches to a deoxyribose sugar (no -OH group at the 2′ carbon).
Deoxyadenosine
•A nucleoside found in DNA composed of deoxyribose and cytosine.
•formed when cytosine attaches to a deoxyribose sugar (no -OH group at the 2′ carbon).
