Observing Cells Flashcards

(11 cards)

1
Q

What is the difference between magnification and resolution?

A

Magnification is the how much bigger the image you see is than the real object.

Resolution is the measure of how close two objects can be before they are seen as one.

Q

What are the advantages of the light microscope?

A

-can see live pathogen so can compare with living tissue
-relatively cheap so available to many people
-relatively light and portable so can be used almost anywhere

Q

What are the disadvantages of a light microscope?

A

-limited resolution and magnification
-require a stain so can cause the observation to be a result of preparation rather than a true representation of the living tissue

Q

What is a transmission electron micrograph?

A

Micrographs produced by the electron microscope that gives 2D images like those of a light microscope but magnified up to 500000 times

Q

What is a scanning electron micrograph?

A

Are micrographs produced by the electron microscope that have a lower magnification than TEMs but produce a 3D images
