Q

When would you need a six figure grid reference?

A

To provide a more exact location

20
Q

What are the five ways of showing heights on an OS map?

A

1.colour layering
2. triangulation pillars
3.contour lines
4.Summit information
5. Spot height

21
Q

What colour is land below 400 meters?

22
Q

What colour is land between 400 and 599 meters

23
Q

What colour is land above 600 m?

24
Q

What are contour lines?

A

Lines with numbers written on them that join points of equal height above sea level

25
Why would contour lines be drawn close together?
To show steep ground
26
What is another word for height?
Relief
27
What are spot heights?

What are often built close to triangulation pillars?
Communication systems in the country such as TV radio and phone masts
30
What is summit information?
Black dots with colour around them used to assist hillwalkers
31
what are the four types of slopes?
1.concave slopes 2. Convex slopes 3. Even, graded, or uniform slopes 4. Stepped slopes.
32
What are concave slopes?
The slopes that have a steeper upper section and a gentle lower section
33
What are convex slopes?
Slopes that have a gentle upper section and sleep lower section
34
What are even, graded or uniform slopes?
These are slopes that have contours that are evenly spaced
35
What are stepped slopes?
Slopes that have contours that show combination of flat and steep sections
36
How many steps are there to sketch in a map?
Seven
37
What is the first step to sketch a map?
Pick your orientation
38
What is the next step to sketching a map
Mark in nine squares
39
What is the third step to making a map?
Giving it a title
40
What is the fourth step to marking a map?
Put in the north arrow
41
What is the fifth step to drawing a map?
If there is a coastline or a significant area of water, draw it
42
What is the sixth step to marking a map?
Marking features you are asked to
43
What is the seventh step of making a map?
Name the features on your sketch map or draw a key
