Q

Describe the formation of granite

A

When magma cools deep inside the earth’s crust, it cools very slowly over thousands of years. This allows the different minerals in the magma, such as silica, to grow into crystals.
The presence of these crystals in the rocks is a sign that the rock is granite.

9
Q

Describe the formation of basalt

A

If lava erupts out of a volcano, it cools quickly on the earth’s surface as it comes in contact with air, frost, snow and water. This fast cooling does not allow the crystals, e.g. silica, to grow very big. In fact, they are microscopic.

12
Q

Describe the formation of sedimentary rock

A

-rock particles build up on the sea floor or lake bed
-the great weight of sediments squashes the air and water out from between the grains of rock (compaction
-calcite or silica minerals in the sediments stuck the grains together to make a solid rock

18
Q

Draw a diagram of how sedimentary rocks form

A

Good job girl :)

19
Q

What are the metamorphic rocks?

A

Quartzite
Marble
Slate

20
Q

How do metamorphic rocks form?

A

When the great heat of magma and lava as well as pressure from plate movement changes rocks

21
Q

What temperature can magma and lava reach?

22
Q

What are the transformations of metamorphic rocks?

A

Limestone-marble
Sandstone-quartzite
Shale-slate
