• Episodes of severe paroxysms (attacks) of coughing followed by an inspiratory gasp (“whoop” sound)
• In infants below 3 months of age, the “whoop” is less common and apnoea is more often a feature.
• Coughing attacks are more common at night and are often followed by vomiting and may be severe enough to cause cyanosis.
