Ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line, dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx, and sacrotuberous ligament

3/4 of the fibres insert in to the illiotibial tract (which inserts into Gerdy’s tubercle – a smooth circular facet on the lateral condyle of the tibia)
Gluteus maximus innervation
Inferior Gluteal nerve (L5, S1, & S2)
Gluteus maximus actions
Extends the flexed hip joint, assists in lateral rotation, abducts the thigh, and stabilizes the hip
