What type of passive movements are there
passive psychological movements
Accessory movements
Neuro dynamics
What are accessory movements
Involuntary joint movements we can’t control-rolls,slides,spins-happens within our limbs
What is the convex rule ?
At a moving joint ,the convex surface moves in the opposite direction of where the bone moves
If an arm moves up, the humerus head (the convex surface) slides down
What is the concave rule ?
At a moving joint the concave surface moves is the same direction as the moving bone
In the knee joint, the tibia surface (concave) moves on the femoral condyles (convex) during flexion: as the tibia rolls posteriorly, ithe concave surface rolls posteriorly.
What are the physiological effects of passive movements
Helps maintain a range of motion
Improves cartilage nutrition
Improves lymph drainages
May have an analgesic pain (reduction/elimination of pain)
May influence tissues through mechanotransduction
What indictates that we should not perform any passive movements (contraindications)?
Excessive pain
Unstable fractures
DVT
Infection
Acute inflammatory conditions
Suspected malignancy (cancerous tissue growth)
skin graphs
Joint replacements
What is passive insufficiency described as?
The inability of a muscle to stretch across two joints
What is active insufficiency described as?
the inability of a muscle to contract fully and produce effective force when it is shortened across two joints.
