what was our practical investigation for learning theories and the aim?
investigate gender differences in mobile phone operation
what was the hypothesis
there WILL be a significant difference between men and women in the no of hands used to hold and operate a mobile phone
what was the IV in the practical
the gender so either male or female
what was the DV in the practical
3 categories:
-using both hands to hold and operate
-using the same hand to hold and operate
-using different hands to hold and operate
what was the quantitative data collected?
a table the ticked which category the pp fell into
what was the qualitative data collected
detailed notes eg where they were, holding the phone portrait or landscape, doing another activity whilst using the phone, how many feet on the floor, posture etc
explain the procedure used
1)select a pp to observe who is using and operating a mobile phone and they will not be informed that their behaviour is being observed until after the data is recorded
2)use the tally sheet to record weather pp is male or female and what coding category they fall into (structured observation)
3)make detailed notes for an interval of 2-3 mins of their behaviour (unstructured observation)
4)if done in a domestic setting debrief pp explaining confidentitiality and rtw
give two strengths of the practical for learning theories
1)objectivity; used both quantitative and qualitative data as well as a behaviour checklist so it is clear what behaviours observers are looking for. Converted qualitative data into quantitative so can only be interpreted one way (content analysis)
2)ecological validity; observed pp in a real world setting so accurate reflection in any differences in mobile phone operation between males and females
what calculation did we use?
chi squared
