ASD precaution
Be aware of child’s sensory system and tendencies toward overstimulation; some children have difficulty transitioning between activities, so cues and warnings may be needed
ASD complication
Difficulty with various sensory stimuli, become overwhelmed with sounds, visual input, tactile stimuli, causing shut down and not be able to participate in therapy
Down Syndrome precaution
Protect joints from extreme ROM secondary to hypotonia and ligamentous laxity
Observe for signs of inadequate management of thyroid and cardiopulmonary comorbidities
down syndrome complication
Behavioral challenges secondary to young age and intellectual disability
OA instability
Rare medical complications
which has risk factor
increase paternal
increase maternal
ASD
DS
hemipolymicrogyria precaution
Significantly increased tone often requires meds
ADRs of these meds (Decreased alertness, weakness)
Forcing movements against significantly increased tone can cause structural problems
Hemipolymicrogyria
Complications
Increased speed or activity can
increase tone in hemiparetic side
Long term use of constraint induced therapy could interfere with B limb use
Significant tone reduction could negatively affect movement, especially if child was relying on tone for stability
Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Precautions
No passive twisting, rotating, or forceful range of motion (ROM) in the extremities or trunk due to high fracture risk; pain, weakness, fatigue;
close guarding during WB activities to decrease risk of fall or injury;
close monitoring of skin when wearing AFOs
OI
complication
Pt discomfort with AFO due to postsurgical LE swelling;
pain may limit activity tolerance;
patient and parent anxiety regarding potential fractures;
UE deformities may increase difficulty using walker
DMD
Precautions
No resisted or forceful ROM to the extremities or trunk b/c high fx risk/damage to muscles
Pain, weakness, fatigue
Assistance with WB activities required during transfers to decrease risk of fall/injury
Close monitoring of skin when wearing orthoses
DMD complications
pt discomfort with AFO and prolonged positioning
anxiety potential fx
CP - Postsecondary Education and Transition to Adulthood
Precautions
Fatigue, pain, postural asymmetries, decreased balance
CP - Postsecondary Education and Transition to Adulthood
Complications
Medical insurance plan restrictions,
increased time/energy demands for daily task, employment, exercise.
Decline of mobility and increase in secondary impairments from CP. transition to adult oriented HC providers.
Lack of public transportation accessibility
CP - Fitness
Precautions
Appropriate warm up/cool down to decrease risk of injury
Monitor biomechanical alignment issues and adverse effects such as MSK related pain
CP fitness complications
overuse injuries
CP fitness contras
uncontrolled seizure
severe osteoporosis
