  • 2 or more symptoms need to be present for a significant portion of time during a 1 month period:
  • delusions
  • hallucinations
  • disorganised speech
  • grossly disorganised behaviour
  • negative symptoms

  • if delusions are bizarre
  • hallucinations consist of a voice keeping up running commentary on persons behaviour/thoughts
  • 2 or more voices conversing with each other

  • for a significant period since the onset of disturbance
  • 1 or main areas of functioning, e.g work, interpersonal relations, self care
  • are markedly below level achieved prior to onset

  • continuous signs of disturbance persist for at least 6 months
  • this period must include at least 1 month of symptoms that meet criteria A
  • may include periods of prodromal (symptoms displayed at onset of disorder)
  • or residual symptoms
  • during prodromal or residual symptoms signs of disturbance may be manifested in negative symptoms or 2 or more symptoms for criteria A in an attenuated form

  • have been ruled out due to :
  • major depressive, manic or mixed episodes have occurred concurrently with active phase symptoms
  • or if mood episodes have occurred during active phase symptoms, their total duration has been brief relative to these active and residual periods

A
  • disturbance is not due to direct physiological effects of a substance
  • or a general medical condition

relationship to a pervasive developmental disorder

A
  • if there is a history of Autistic disorder or another PDD
  • the additional diagnosis of SZ is made only is prominent delusions or hallucinations are also present for at least a month

  • suspicion, anxiety and anger

- confusion and incoherence - severe deterioration of personal hygiene - thought disorganisation is so extreme it is difficult to communicate - childlike behaviour

catatonic schizophrenia
- disturbances in movement - extreme and prolonged rigidity or repetitive random movements

residual schizophrenia
- symptoms of sz are present - however experienced mildly

undifferentiated schizophrenia
- individuals who show some symptoms across the previous categories - but not one of them enough to be diagnosed
