What is independent reporting
Independent reporting is when information about a sexual assault is reported to command or law enforcement from a source other than the victim, before the victim elects restricted or unrestricted reporting. It still triggers the formal response process, and the victim is immediately offered SHARP services, even though they did not initiate the report

• A witness reports it • A medical provider not tied to SHARP reports it • Law enforcement opens an investigation after separate evidence • Digital evidence (texts, videos, photos) surfaces • A friend or bystander reports without the victim’s request
