What is storage in memory?
The second process, its effectively retaining info for later use.
What is the sensory memory/register?
The first place a stimuli goes. A storage system that registers (and briefly holds) information from senses. Most conceptually in visual info (iconic) and auditory info (echoic).
What is the duration and capacity of storage for iconic memory?
Around 0.5 second duration, 9-10 items for capacity
What is the duration and capacity of storage for echoic memory?
Around 2 second duration, around 5 items for capacity
What is the storm term memory (STM)?
The second place a stimuli goes after sensory register. Its an intermediate storage system that briefly holds information before consolidation.
What is the STM task?
The digit spam studies which presents a series of numbers and digit typically in auditory form and asks participants to remember as many as they can and then saying it back.
What is the capacity and duration for STM?
Around 20 second duration, around 7-9 capacity for recall for varying length digit lists
What was proposed about STM and its components?
A researcher used an experimental paradigm which asked people to do two STM tasks simultaneously (remembering digits + grammatical reasoning task. Found that the digit spam task was completed by one subcomponent of the STM and reasoning task by others. He then proposed the working memory.
What is the working memory (WM)?
It is having more components than STM which has an executive competent instructing other systems what to do. It is seperate to the STM.
What is the long term memory (LTM)?
The third place a stimuli goes after the STM in the traditional view. Its a storage system that retains the info for a long period of time.
What is the capacity and duration for LTM?
Large capacity + long duration around more than 20 seconds
