Beliefs, values or feelings linked to another attitude, object or thing
How can attitudes be formed?
Triadic Model
Need 3 aspects in unison
*Cognitive - what you think and know
E.g I think that exercise it’s important to stay fit and healthy
*Affective - what you feel about an attitude, object or thing
E.g I enjoy and feel I should run twice a week
*behavioural - what you do about it
E.g I run twice a week and complete a park run each Saturday
What are the ways of changing attitudes?
Cognitive dissonance
Persuasive communication
Describe cognitive dissonance
Creation of conflict
*Coach might give more information yo the performer to cause unease and motivate change
*A coach might make something more enjoyable and this may challenge their attitude
*A knowledgeable and motivational role model may change an attitude
What’s persuasive communication?
Communication to promote change
When giving new information ensure:
*The timing is effective
*the message is clear
*The person giving the message is of high status
*The person is open minded to accept new information
How are attitudes created?
*Socialisation
watching and copying significant others
*Conditioning
reinforce successful behaviour
*Past experiences
fear of failure = negative attitude
*Familiarity/frequent exposure
more likely to form a positive attitude
