Active Listening
The general level of background sound
Ambient noise
The process of conveying an intended message from the sender to the receiver and getting feedback to ensure accuracy
Communication process
The 5th and final link of the communication chain. Allows the sender (the instructor) to determine whether the receiver (the student) understood the message
Feedback
An official fire department communication. The letter or report is presented on stationery with the fire department letterhead and generally is signed by a chief officer or headquarters staff member.
Formal communication
Short-term documents signed by the fire chief that remain in force for a period of days to 1 year or more
General Orders
Internal memos, emails, instant messages and computer aided dispatch/mobile data terminal messages. They have a short life and are not archived as permanent records
Informal Communications
A series of formal written questions sent to the opposing side of a legal argument. The opposition must provide written answers under oath
Interrogatory
The 3rd link of communication chain, which describes how you convey the message
Medium
The 2nd and most complex link of the communication chain; it describes what you are trying to convey to your students
Message
Listening with your eyes and other senses without reacting to the message verbally
Passive Listening
The 4th link of the communication chain. In the fire service classroom, this is the student
Receiver
A decision document prepared by a fire officer for the senior staff. The goal is support for a decision or an action
Recommendation report
The 1st link of the communication chain. In the fire service classroom, this is the instructor
