Asynchronous learning
Any educational content that is delivered via a computer
Courseware
An instructional approach that reverses or flips the standard learning environment by delivering online content for self-study and reserving the physical classroom for mentored practice that traditionally would have been assigned as homework
Flipped classroom
Learning environment in which some content is available for completion online and other learning requires face-to-face instruction or demonstration; sometimes referred to as blended or distributed learning
Hybrid learning
A learning environment in which a human instructor facilitates both the in-person sections and the online components of coursework. Instructors usually set deadlines for submission, create quizzes and assignments, and track student progress
Instructor-led training
A web-based software application that allows online courseware and content to be delivered to learners, and also includes classroom administration tools such as activity tracking, grades, communications, and calendars
Learning management system
A learning environment in which learners can stop and start as they desire, progress to completion of a module, and submit a final score to determine whether they passed or failed the module, all without an instructor’s involvement
Self-directed study
An informal method of learning using technologies that enable collaborative content creation. Examples include blogs, social media, collaborative discussions, and wikis
Social learning
An online class format that requires students and instructors to be online at the same time. Lectures, discussions, and presentations occur at a specific hour and students must be online at the time to participate and receive credit for attendance
Synchronous learning
Training and education that uses the Internet or a multimedia tool
Technology-based instruction
A digital environment where content can be posted and shared, and where instructors can create quizzes and assignments to be completed and tracked online via an Internet-connected computer
