Q

what happens during keratinization

A

-as epidermis divides cells gets pushed further to surface away from the dermis
-lacks nutrients and eventually die hardening in the process

6
Q

what are factors that affect skin color

A

-amount of melanin that melanocytes produce (can be caused by genes)
-sunlight and UV stimulate production of melanin
-diet high in certain foods
-biochemical imbalances

Q

what are the functions of dermal nervous tissue

A

supply nutrients to all skin cells, regulate body temperature, carry impulses from brain to dermal muscles and glands

Q

what is the hypodermis layer and its function

A

-below the dermis
-conserves body heat, contains blood vessels that supply the skin
-composed of fat

9
Q

how is blood supplied to various skin layers

A

connection between the dermis and hypodermis contains various blood vessels that supply blood to skin

Q

what is the difference between hair and a hair follicle

A

-hair is what grows out of a hair follicle but is dead keratin
-the hair follicle is alive and is skin that the hair grows from

Q

what is the function of sebaceous glands

A

secrete sebum which is used to keep hair and skin soft, pliable and waterproof

Q

what is the difference between eccrine and apocrine sweat glands

A

-eccrine; respond to change in temperature; located in head, neck, and back
-apocrine; responds to emotions or pain; located in axillary and groin

14
Q

how do sweat glands regulate body temperature

A
  1. Sweat glands become active when body gets hot
  2. Sweat is released onto body
  3. As sweat evaporates carries heat with it cooling the body

15
Q

how does the body respond to decreasing body temperature

A
  1. Muscle in the walls of dermal blood vessels stimulate to contract
  2. Decreases blood flow throughout the skin and reduces heat loss
  3. Sweat glands remain inactive
  4. If body temperature continues to drop nervous system stimulates muscle fibers throughout the body to contract
  5. Increases rate of cellular respiration
  6. If body temperature still not in optimal range group of muscles contracts simultaneously with greater force
  7. Causes person to shiver generating more heat

Q

What are the five layers of the epidermis?

A

stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum basale
Come, Lets get sun burned

18
Q

What are the two layers of the dermis

A

papillary and reticular layer

19
Q

What is the hair made out of?

A

Flexible strand of dead keratinized cells

20
Q

What are the four different type of glands?

A

sweat, ceruminous, mammary, and sebaceous

21
Q

What are the functions of eccrine and apocrine glands

A

eccrine (most)
-secretion occurs in dermis and secreted out of a pore
apocrine
-secrete fat and protein causing body odor

22
Q

What is the function ceruminous glands?

A

produce earwax

23
Q

What is the function of mammary glands?

A

produces breast milk

24
Q

What is the function of sebaceous glands?

A

secretes sebum which lubricates hair and skin

25
What causes redness from inflammation?
increased vasodilation (widening of blood vessels); more blood flowing
26
What causes heat from inflammation?
by-product of increased metabolic activity in WBC to destroy bacteria
27
What causes swelling from inflammation?
increased fluid due to a change in osmotic pressues caused by an increase in # of WBC
28
What causes pain from inflammation?
Swelling puts pressure on nerve endings
29
What is the function of the dermis?
-cells divide slower, supply nutrients to cells using blood vessels, regulate body temperature, contains hair follicles
