Joints
any place where bone or bones, and cartilage come together
What are the functions of joints?
-binds parts of the skeletal system
-make bone growth possible
-permit parts of skeletal system to change during child birth
-enable body to move in response to skeletal muscle contraction
How are joints classified?
-the degree of movement they make possible (immovable, slightly moveable or freely moveable)
-structurally (fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial)
Synarthrosis Joints
-fused togther tightly and do not allow any movement
Fibrous Joints
-between bones that closely contact one another
-no movement
Amphiarthrosis Joints
-some but limited movement
Cartilaginous Joints
-helped together by dense bonds and slightly flexible
Synchondrosis Joints
-helped together by cartilage
-slightly moveable
Symphysis Joints
-held together by stronger cartiliage
-slightly moveable
Diarthrosis Joints
-fully movable joints
-can move at different angles
Synovial Joints
-fluid-filled capsules, no fibers, connecting bone together allows free movement
-ligaments stabilize joints
