Q

External acoustic meatus
(Middle and Inner Ear on VIN)

-What is proper word for earwax?

A

Canal leading from base of auricle to the tympanic membrane. Cartilaginous at first, then becomes bony proximally.

Earwax is called cerumen, “cera” means wax in Latin

A

Filled with air. Communicates with the nasopharynx via the auditory tube (musculotubal canal on VIN). Lateral border is tympanic membrane, medial border is temporal bone

Q

Auditory ossicles: Malleus, incus, stapes
(Middle and Inner Ear on VIN)

A

Hammer, anvil and stirrup. Handle of malleus is in the tympanic membrane. The footplate of the stapes sits in the vestibular window

Q

Cochlear window
(Middle and Inner Ear on VIN)

A

Opening in medial wall of tympanic cavity, other side is the cochlea. Pressure relief valve, allows perilymph to move through cochlea.

Also called round window

Q

Cochlear duct
*Cochlear canaliculus on VIN
(Middle and Inner Ear on VIN)

A

Attached to the sacculus, sits between the vestibular and tympanic ducts.

Contains endolymph. Inside the cochlea, and surrounded by perilymph.

16
Q

Perilymphatic duct

A

Within the temporal bone, connects perilymphatic space of the inner ear to the subarachnoid space

17
Q

Endolymphatic duct

A

From the sacculus to the dura mater. Involved in resorption of endolymph

18
Q

Semicircular duct

A

Detect rotational movements. Wide part before the utriculus called ampulla

19
Q

Internal acoustic meatus
(Middle and Inner Ear on VIN)

A

Passage in the temporal bone, facial and vestibulocochlear nerves enter

20
Q

Vestibulocochlear nerve
(Middle and Inner Ear on VIN)

A

Divides at the internal acoustic meatus into auditory and cochlear nerves
