Body of tongue
Frenulum
Loose tissue connecting tongue to floor of mouth
Means little bridle/break, stops tongue from moving too far
Torus (ruminants)
Raised part of caudal tongue. Mechanical aid.
Lyssa and median sulcus (Raphe) (canine)
Lyssa is a rod of cartilage in the middle of the tongue.
Median sulcus is the longitudinal furrow on tongue.
Ruminants: lingual fossa
Median of tongue, on rostral edge of torus. It is an indent in the tongue just showing the boundary of the apex of tongue and torus.
Papillae: filiform, conical, lentiform, fungiform, vallate, foliate
Mechanical only:
Filiform: Located in rostral 2/3, soft to touch small
Conical: Located in caudal 1/3, larger, cornified in cat and bovine
Ruminants - Lentiform: Flattened filiform, on torus, have white ring around them?
Carry taste buds:
Fungiform: Mushroom like, scattered throughout
NOT ruminants - Foliate: Leaf like/book pages, lateral surface of caudal tongue
Vallate (means wall, they are crater-like): Large, circular, base of tongue
Geniohyoideus muscle
Lies deep to mylohyoideus
Runs from: Intermandibular articulation to basihyoid
Function: Draws the hyoid apparatus and larynx rostrally
Genioglossus muscle
Runs from: Medial surface of mantible to tongue
Pans the intermandibular space, arises as a thin sheet of transverse fibres from the medial surface of the mandible,
Function: Forms a sling that aids in support of the tongue
Hyoglossus muscle
Runs from: Thyrohyoid and basihyoid bones to the root of tongue
it lies medial to the styloglossus
Function: Retracts and depresses the tongue
Styloglossus muscle
Runs from: Stylohyoid bone to the middle of tongue
Function: Retract and elevate the tongue
Mylohyoideus
Runs from: Medial surface of mandible to hyoid.
Forms a sling that aids in support of the tongue
