What is the amnion?
First membrane to develop, surrounds embryo and secretes amniotic fluid
What does amniotic fluid do?
Protects embryo, maintains temperature, allows free movement
When does amnion rupture?
Usually just before childbirth
What is the chorion?
Formed from blastocyst outer cells + mesoderm, surrounds embryo and other membranes, forms foetal part of placenta
What are chorionic villi?
Finger-like projections filled with blood vessels, increasing surface area for exchange
What is the placenta?
Organ that supplies nutrients, removes waste, and produces hormones
Do maternal and foetal blood mix?
No, separated by cell layers
How does exchange occur in the placenta?
By diffusion and active transport
When is the placenta fully formed?
By the end of the third month
What attaches foetus to placenta?
Umbilical cord
What blood vessels are in the umbilical cord?
Two arteries (to mother), one vein (to foetus)
How does blood enter and leave maternal side of placenta?
Enters via uterine arteries, leaves via uterine veins
Summary of embryonic membranes and placenta?
Amnion and chorion protect and nourish embryo. Placenta enables nutrient/waste exchange and hormone production, connected by umbilical cord
