Q

How do hormones cause change?

A

-Hormones are CHEMICALS released from one part of the body and carried through the BLOODSTEAM to affect another part of the body.
-Hormones are released in SMALL QUANTITIES and are VERY SPECIFIC
-Needs to connect to the specific type of target cell’s receptors to affect cells. Target cells have receptors for specific hormones.

Q

Exocrine glands?

A

-Glands that secrete into ducts or tubes that lead to the body surface
-they secrete externally
-They deliver their products directly to a specific site

Q

Endocrine glands?

A
  • The cells, tissues, and organs that make up the endocrine system
    -They are ductless
-they secrete hormones into the bloodstream
    -“endocrine” means “internal secretion.”

Q

What changes do hormones produce (one or more) in target cells

A
  1. alter plasma membrane permeability, potential, or both
  2. stimulate protein synthesis
    3.activate/deactivate enzymes
  3. induce a secretory activity
  4. stimulate mitosis
