Speed of aircraft
Measured in Mach number, which is a velocity relative to the speed of sound.
Speed of sound
770 mph or 1239 km/h at sea level
what is a supersonic aircraft?
A supersonic flight is one that is able to fly faster that the speed of sound which is faster Mach 1
Where is this technology used the most.
Military in fighter jets
Supersonic flights includes speeds up to ___ times faster than the speed of sound, or ____
5, Mach 5
Describe subsonic speed
AT this speed, an aircraft is travelling slower than the speed of sound, about less than Mach 0.8
Examples of Subsonic speed
Cessna 172, ultralights, and paragliders
Describe Transonic Flight
At this speed an air craft is approaching the speed of sound but hasn’t yet reached and surpassed Mach 1
Example of transonic flight are
Cessna Citation X and Gulfstream G650
Describe supersonic speed
At this speed, the entire aircraft is experiencing supersonic airflow and travelling at speeds faster that Mach 1. Generally Supersonic flights range from Mach 1.2 to Mach 5
Examples of Supersonic Speed
FL-4 Phantom II
Describe Hypersonic speed
At this speed the aircraft is travelling faster than Mach 5
Examples of Hypersonic speed
Rockets and Space Shuttles
The first person to fly faster than speed of sound
Captain Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager
What is Sonic boom
A sonic boom is a thunder like noise heard by a person on the ground when an aircraft flies overhead faster than the speed of the sound which travels at the speed of about 750 mph at sea level
How does Supersonic flight work
In order to travel faster than the speed of sound, the plane needs to be able to break through the shock wave. 1. As the aircraft flies through the air, it pushes air out of its way, continuously creating sound waves. 2. when the energy from the shockwaves reaches our ears, it is heard as a loud crack of a sonic boom 3. tHe shock waves will move out and away from the aircraft, creating a sudden change in pressure. 4. The air pressure waves begin to pile up ahead of the airplane and compress, forming shock waves. 5. These sound waves or air pressure waves move away from the aircraft in all directions at the speed of sound
