Q

Describe supersonic speed

A

At this speed, the entire aircraft is experiencing supersonic airflow and travelling at speeds faster that Mach 1. Generally Supersonic flights range from Mach 1.2 to Mach 5

Q

What is Sonic boom

A

A sonic boom is a thunder like noise heard by a person on the ground when an aircraft flies overhead faster than the speed of the sound which travels at the speed of about 750 mph at sea level

Q

How does Supersonic flight work

A

In order to travel faster than the speed of sound, the plane needs to be able to break through the shock wave. 1. As the aircraft flies through the air, it pushes air out of its way, continuously creating sound waves. 2. when the energy from the shockwaves reaches our ears, it is heard as a loud crack of a sonic boom 3. tHe shock waves will move out and away from the aircraft, creating a sudden change in pressure. 4. The air pressure waves begin to pile up ahead of the airplane and compress, forming shock waves. 5. These sound waves or air pressure waves move away from the aircraft in all directions at the speed of sound
