aim
investigate how negative social representations of Brixton affect the self-esteem and identity of young people living there
type
focus groups of 8 people and interviews
part
44 teens aged 12-16 from brixton and 5 teachers from local schools
procedure
participants were asked abt their experiences living in brixton and how they think outsiders view the area. questions abt identity, racism, community, school, etc were asked to guide the convo. a thematic analysis of the responses was conducted.
results
outsiders see brixton as dangerous and criminal. however teens living there rejected that opinions, describing their city as creative and vibrant. when discussing the topics, participants discussed how negatively portrayed they are in the media, and how they cope with outsder’s stereotypes
conc
negative stereotypes can harm self esteem but a strong group identity can resist those effects.
weak
analysis can be biased, can tbe generalised, participants may have given socially acceptable answers as they were discussing in groups and because it involved sensitive issues, affecting the accuracy of the research.
