participants were given a standardized verbal test and randomly assigned to 2 different conditions:
1. stereotype threat condition: participants were told that the test measured intellectual ability
2. no threat: participants were told that the test was just a problem solving task, not related to ability

AA students performed worse than european american students in the stereotype threat condition only.
