Q

What are the main types of communication that a GI will use in a lesson?

A
  1. Initiate (productive and effective conversation)
  2. Reply
  3. Evaluate

Q

What are the 10 principles of learning? (Peter Let)

A
  1. Interest (make more interesting if need be)
  2. Intent to remember (find ways to increase if need be)
  3. Basic Background (increasing ME to learning, have a clear understanding of where they are)
  4. Selectivity (don’t teach all things all the time)
  5. Meaningful Organisation (teach the structure of the info)
  6. Recitation (get them to explain it, not state it - SL->LT)
  7. Mental Visualisation (pictures/symbols etc - diff part of brain)
  8. Association (with what they know)
  9. Consolidation (review, ask q’s, visualise, recite, practice tests
  10. Distributed Practice - LT memory. First 10 and last 10 mins most valuable - how valuable is a 3 hour session?

Q

What are the Genius principles of Elucidation?

A
  • Growing own understanding
  • Knowing your audience
  • Letting the student talk through it
  • Actually explaining (stories, analogies etc)
  • Using structures in explanation (Problem - Solution - Benefit etc)
  • Telling stories
  • Using analogies (understand through connection. “Electricity though a circuit is like water through a pipe”)
  • Using examples
  • Spec to Gen vs Gen to Spec
  • Using visuals
  • Simplifying (eliminate jargon)
  • Elicit reflection

Q

What are the categories in Blooms Taxonomy? (the increasingly complex/demanding list of cognitive skills) (6)

A
  1. Remembering
  2. Understanding (e.g. summarize plot)
  3. Applying
  4. Analysing (ID why a machine isn’t working)
  5. Evaluating (judgment in an ethical dilemma etc)
  6. Creating (create a formula that solves a problem)

Q

What are two ways in which one should use Bloom’s Taxonomy?

A
  • Use every level. Even memorisation has value and decreases cognitive load at higher levels
  • Bloom’s Spiraling: start at lower levels and increase as the lesson/weeks go on

Q

What are the 4 different learning styles?

A
  1. Visual/spatial (make diagrams, handouts, presentations)
  2. Auditory (get them to answer, use videos, music, tapes etc)
  3. Kinaesthetic (need to make the abstract physical - act out idea etc. Need more breaks)
  4. Reading/writing (easiest to cater to - expression to reading and writing)

Q

Explain topic categories - one of the dimensions to consider when marking exam/test papers

A

A measure of how a learner did in each section that was being tested (e.g. calculus)

Too broad - nothing to focus on. Too narrow - too many things to focus on.

Q

Explain error types - one of the dimensions to consider when marking exam/test papers

A

A breakdown of how marks are being lost according to the six types of examination errors
1. Misread directions errors
2. Careless errors (can dress up as 3.)
3. Concept errors
4. Application errors (know concept but can’t apply)
5. Test procedure errors (timing, rushing, copying errors etc)
6. Study errors (focus on wrong info etc)

Q

In addition to subject specific content, what are GIs supposed to teach students?

A
  • Time and task management (for subject)
  • Study skills (for subject)
  • Exam techniques (for subject)

Primary role is to teach student to become independently effective in their subject
