What is a fixed joint?
A joint that can’t move at all, found in the cranium for example
What is a synovial joint (also known as freely moveable)?
Has a greater amount of movement, consists of many parts, for example knee, elbow, shoulder and hip.
What is a slightly moveable joint?
Bones in the joint can move a small amount as they are linked by ligament and cartilage, for example vertebrae
Where are hinge joints found and how can they move?
Hinge joints are found in the elbow and knee for example and can do flexion and extension
What are ball and socket joints and how can they move?
Are found in the hip and shoulder, and can do flexion, extension, abduction, Adduction and rotation.
What are the 6parts of a synovial joint?
Synovial membrane, synovial fluid, bursae, cartilage, ligament and joint capsule
What does the synovial membrane do?
Surrounds and produces the synovial fluid
What does synovial fluid do?
Lubricates the joint reducing friction
What does cartilage do?
It’s a strong flexible material found at the end of bones and is used for cushioning
What does a ligament do?
Connects bone to bone
What does the joint capsule do?
The joint capsule is the structure surrounding and protecting the joint
What does bursae do?
Bursae are fluid filled sacks that reduce friction between moving parts in the joint
