Benzodiazepine, sedative hypnotic , anti convulsant, schedule IV drug
Indication ( Lorazepam )
Uncontrolled shivering associated with hyperthermia/ heat exposure, active seizures, anxiety/sedation chemical restraint
MOA ( Lorazepam )
Anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative effect, suppresses propagation of seizure activity, produced by foci in the cortex, thalamus and limbic areas, inhibits GABA receptors in the CNS, reducing neuron excitability
Side effects of ( Lorazepam )
Dizziness, drowsiness, CNS Depression, headache, sedation, respiratory depression, apnea, hypotension, bradycardia
Contraindications ( Lorazepam )
Documented hypersensitivity, neurologic or respiratory depression, acute narrow angle glaucoma, sleep apnea, shock, suspected drug abuse
Drug interaction ( Lorazepam )
Concomitant use with other CNS depressants may cause respiratory depression ,hypotension, profound sedation, and death, Individuals taking passionflower or st johns wort may experience hand tremors, dizziness and muscular fatigue. Motherwort can potentiate the sedative effects and may result in coma
Dose ( Lorazepam )
When given IV IO must be diluted with an equal volume or sterile water or sterile saline.
ADULT : Anxiety/ sedation; 0.1 mg/kg IV slowly over 2 minutes ( maximum single dose: 4 mg ) 4 mg IM.
Chemical restraint Give 2 mg IV or 4 mg IM
Pediatric 0.1 mg/kg IV/IO slowly over 2 minutes maximum single dose: 4 mg)
Duration ( Lorazepam )
Onset 2 to 5 minutes IV; 15 minutes to 30 minutes IM
Peak less than 15 minutes IV; 2 to 3 hours IM
Duration 6 to 8 hours IV/IM
