Indication for magnesium
Management of tdp; severe bronchoconstriction with impending respiratory failure, seizure during the third trimester of pregnancy or in the postpartum patient
Side effects for magnesium
Drowsiness, cns depression, respiratory depression, respiratory tract paralysis, vasodilation, possible hypotension and bradycardia with tepid administration
Contraindications for magnesium
H/S, heart block, myocardial damage, diabetic coma, hypermagnesima.
Use with caution in patients with known renal suffciency
Dose for magnesium
Severe hypertension ; lasting more than 15 mins with associated preeclampsia
Give 4 mg of 20% solution iv io over 20 mins, FOLLOWED by 1 g/h IV IO if available
Seizure w pregnancy: 4mg of 50% solution iv/io over 10-20 mins
Cardiac - 1-2mg over 5-60 mins
Same for asthmatics except it’s 15-30 mins
Pediatric- pulseless VT with tdp
25-50mg /kg IV IO bolus of 50% solution max dose 2g
