Methoxyflurane is a volatile, self-administered inhalational analgesic (CNS depressant)
at low concentrations and is indicated for short-term pain relief.

• Moderate pain.

Question 3

Contraindications of Methoxyflurane?

• MR CHA

Answer 3

• Personal or first degree relative history of malignant hyperthermia
• Age <1 year
• Pre-existing renal disease or impairment
• Pre-existing hepatic disease
• Current use of tetracycline antibiotics.

Cautions of Methoxyflurane?
- DOPA

Answer 4

• Altered level of consciousness
• Intoxicated or drug affected patients
• Pre-eclampsia
• Concurrent use with Oxytocin may cause hypotension.

Side Effects of Methoxyflurane?
- CAR

• Altered level of consciousness
• Cough
• Renal or liver failure post repeated high doses.

Dosing Regimes of Methoxyflurane?

Answer 6

Analgesia
- Adults = 3ml INH, repeating once at 20mins to a max of 6ml
- Paeds (>1yr) = Single 3ml INH dose

Onset and duration of Methoxyflurane?

• Onset = 1–3 minutes
• Duration = 5–10 minutes
