10mg Orally Dissolving Tablet (ODT)

Atypical antipsychotic, antagonist at multiple receptor sites,
particularly serotonin 5-HT, dopamine and histamine.

Indicators of Olanzapine?

• Mild to moderate agitation, SAT Score 1–2.

Contraindications of Olanzapine?

• Known allergy

Cautions of Olanzapine?
- AA PPE

Answer 4

• Alcohol intoxication, avoid over sedation
• Elderly, frail and young children are more susceptible to adverse
  effects
• May be less effective with alcohol withdrawal and patients on
  stimulant
• In pregnancy only administer if benefit outweighs any potential risks
• Similar presentation to Ondansetron, care must be taken to ensure right medication given.

Side Effects of Olanzapine?

• Dizziness
• Sedation
• QT prolongation and extrapyramidal reactions unlikely at approved doses.

Dosing Regimes of Olanzapine?

Agitation
- Adults 10mg SL or 5mg SL if <60kg/frail/eldery, repeating after 30mins to a max of 20mg
- Paeds <16years = consult

Onset and duration of Olanzapine?

• Onset = 15 minutes
• Duration = 12–24 hours
